Love this post, Josh! Do you think this advice changes based on the level, i.e. Operator vs. Leaeder? + How do you maintain early work/life boundaries with this approach....:)
Great question! I think a lot of the advice is tailored to more experienced people, IC, or managers. Presumably, more junior people will have a real manager who can provide real scaffolding. But that first PM hire at a startup, even if poorly supported and with limited experience, is often tempted to make big changes quickly. Maybe they've been reading too many articles about what "real" product management is, or maybe they are feeling pressure to make an impact.
In terms of work-life balance? Your first week will suck! But hopefully, if you've invested your time well, that can start to change.
I think its so company specific, particularly founder/CEO specific. But setting the expectations clearly is a game changer. Whether you're an IC or a leader at a startup, having some shared understanding of what the first 30 days like feels like one of the most important contracts you can write.
